The NBA has announced the lifetime ban of Toronto Raptors two-way player Jontay Porter from the league after an investigation found that the 24-year-old violated betting rules.
"After an exhaustive investigation, the league has determined that Jontay Porter has violated Rule 50 of the NBA Constitution," said NBA spokesperson Mike Bass in a statement. "As a result, he has been banned indefinitely from any further participation in NBA activities."
Porter, a forward who played collegiately at the University of Missouri, has been in the league for two seasons. He spent the majority of his time in the G League, the NBA's developmental league. His brother, Michael Porter Jr., is a star forward for the Denver Nuggets.
The NBA's investigation into Porter began after reports surfaced that he had placed bets on NBA games, a violation of league rules. Betting on NBA games is prohibited for players, coaches, and team personnel.
The league's ban of Porter sends a clear message that betting on NBA games will not be tolerated. It is a serious offense that can compromise the integrity of the game.
Porter is the first NBA player to be banned for betting since Tim Donaghy in 2007. Donaghy, a referee, was convicted of taking bribes to fix games.
